Natural Remedy For Asthma
The respiratory disease popularly known as asthma is a common disease, especially among children and young adults, but can be a serious condition. Wheezing, difficulty in breathing, rapid pumping of the heart, chest tightening, are just some of the symptoms and conditions of asthma.
This occurs because in asthma, the airways are constricted by the muscles around it which results in the air not being able to freely move. For those without asthma, the airways do not constrict which allows the air to freely move. Aside from that, asthma patients’ airways are oftentimes inflamed. Add that to the muscles tightening around the airways and it is equal to a very, very difficult time in breathing.
In the relief of asthma, most asthmatics have inhalers along with them. A nebulizer can also be used, but this is a larger piece of equipment, so it is typically seen at home. In terms of dealing with the inflammation of the airways, there are medications such as inhaled corticosteroids.
However, like many diseases, you do not always have to turn to medications and prescription drugs in order to treat this. There are natural means to treat an asthma attack, and natural means to help reduce a future one.
In treating an asthma attack, your goal is to restore normal breathing. By leaning forward while sitting, or in a crouching position, this could help bring back regular breathing. Sometimes, putting a hot and moist towel over your chest while lying down could be helpful to the chest muscles and lead to normal breathing.
To help yourself reduce any possible future attack, you should be disciplined in order to help yourself. Since asthma is a respiratory disease, smoking should not even be considered. Smoking plus a history of asthma will equal disaster, since you are damaging your lungs and give yourself even more difficulty in breathing, instead of trying to restore normal breathing.
You should ban smoking on yourself. Secondary smoking, which is inhaling or constantly being around smokers even if you don’t smoke yourself, would have almost the same effect as if you were smoking. You are not breathing regular air; you are breathing air contaminated with cigarette smoke, which will again cause you difficulty breathing.
Aside from smoking, strong perfumes and scents should also be avoided. Don’t use them yourself (you may use mild ones) and quickly turn away from a person who wears strong perfume so that you will not have to inhale a lot of the perfume-laced air. If the food being cooked emits a really strong aroma, it’s better to avoid it.
Try to integrate simple breathing exercises when you wake up and do so in various portions of the day. By doing this, your respiratory muscles will get a good workout that would be beneficial for you in terms of breathing.
However, when you are experiencing an asthma attack or feel that you are about to experience one while you are exercising, you ought to stop immediately and try to rest in order to recover your breathing.
If your home is not cleaned regularly and dust accumulates, it will do you no good. In fact, it will make your regular breathing worse, especially if there’s a lot of dirt and dust. Having a clean environment in the place where you sleep is a must for a person with asthma.
Mucus could possibly build up around the lungs and the airways. As such, foods and drinks that aid in the formation of mucus should be avoided. These typically are dairy products like milk, ice cream, and cheese. In addition to avoiding these foods, drinking a lot of water will help greatly in the elimination of mucus deposits in the lungs.
There are various herbs and Chinese medicines (which are made from herb extracts) that are specifically made for those with asthma and other lung problems. This would be a healthier alternative rather than taking in regular medication and other prescription drugs.
Asthma attacks can occur at any time and at various degrees of severity. It is better to be prepared and know how to treat it when it occurs, and what to do on a daily basis to try to prevent or at least lessen the frequency of attacks.
NOTE: Asthma can be very serious and even deadly - please see a doctor if you do not have your asthma under control.
