Can Acupuncture really Help in lowering Blood Pressure?

Recently Doctors and Scientists at the Irvine University of California have discovered a new ay of helping to lower blood pressure levels. The method they have been looking into is Electro Acupuncture which seems to have a significant effect on helping to lower blood pressure levels. Although at present tests have only been carried out on rats by inducing low electrical stimulation to the front of their legs and it was discovered that 40 percent of those treated blood pressure levels had decreased prior to treatment (blood pressure levels had been artificially increased prior to the treatment beginning). But these results certainly seem to be opening the doors for the treatment of hypertension and it may well in the future replace traditional medical treatments using this more ancient method instead.

There were a number of methods tested and details are shown below:-

1. Needles were inserted into the rats pericardium 5-6 and they were then rotated every 10 to 30 minutes. Whilst this procedure was being performed the blood pressure levels of the rats where being raised by the doctors.

2. Needles were inserted into the rats’ forelimbs for 30 minutes and no stimulation or twisting took place.

3. Then the pericardium 5-6 was also electrically stimulated with frequencies ranging from 2 to 100 hertz.

Whilst these tests were taking place the changes in the rats’ blood pressure levels were being continuously monitored and all results were carefully recorded. It was soon found that the rats who were most successfully having lower blood pressure levels were those which were involved in the manual and electrical acupuncture treatments. The results showed that these treatments were seriously effecting the lowering of the rats blood pressure levels with the effects lasting for up to one hour and the lowering of the levels were from ranging from 33-36%. However, the best results recorded were on the rats which being treated using Electro Acupuncture and especially in those that were being treated using Electro Acupuncture at a frequency of 2 hertz.

Further more even better results were recorded on the rats who were stimulated at heart (Acupuncture Points 6-7) and stomach (Acupuncture Points 36-37). It was recorded that blood pressure levels using heart stimulation were lowered by up to 44% and those using stomach stimulation were lowered by 36%.

However, one extremely important observation made by the doctors carrying out the tests was that Electro Acupuncture treatment can only lower blood pressure levels in those people suffering from hypertension and would have no effect on healthy people.

Certainly it is hoped in the near future that the use of acupuncture will soon be available to everybody as a way of helping to lower blood pressure levels.
