Fortify Yourself With Tonic Herbs

If you are looking for a natural way to fortify your body, tonic herbs may be for you. They are not used primarily to relieve symptoms, but to enhance your body in a way that is overall safe and with very few side effects, if any.

It is important to note that there are herbs that can be used for both medical and tonic purposes, not all medical herbs can make the crossover to tonic uses. Also, important is to keep in mind that you should seek medical help for a condition; the following information is not designed as medical advice.

Some tonic herbs have been come to be described as adaptogen, a phrase coined by researchers. The adaptogenic herbs, it has been found, are at their peak performance when taken at higher levels of stress.

One of the most familiar tonic herbs is the Ginseng root. Of the varying types of this root, the same characteristics are shared though out.

The type of Ginseng most people are familiar with is the Panax variety. You will see this most often as either red or white ginseng. It is worth noting that the only difference in the two is the treatment of the roots after harvesting.

The word Panax goes back thousands of years. It is derived from the root word panacea which means cure-all. This is how the Panax Ginseng is seen; as a cure all for many many ailments.

There are two types that fall under the heading of Siberian Ginseng. One is the Eleutherococcus Senticosus (Eletheuro) the other is Acanthopanax Gracilistylus. These share many of the same properties. The Eletheuro was the first to be called an adaptogen and is probably the most suited herb universally.

While the full benefits of the Siberian Ginseng are too numerous to list here, a sampling are as follows: improved blood circulation, lowers blood pressure, increased stamina and increased blood flow to the brain.

It has been said among herbalists, that the Siberian Ginseng is the safest to take. So safe, in fact, that it will be given to older and sick patience to give their energy level a boost.

The Americas also have a ginseng root, the Panax Quinquefolium used to grow abundantly in the wild, is now scarce do to over harvesting. Botanically speaking, this is the closest relative to the Panax variety of ginseng.

While all the types of ginseng that work as adaptogens are safe for long term use, there have been reports of one very large difference. Some say that the Panax variety over stimulating and prefer the Siberian type to be more suitable for their lifestyle. Another nice thing about the ginseng is that it is able to be purchased in the form of a capsule, freeze dried power or as the raw herb itself. The capsules and powders make it easy to use; all you have to do is follow the manufactures instructions. However, some in the herbal community believe that you won’t get as many benefits if you used the extracts as opposed to the root in its natural form.
